Those Wild Fuel Altereds:
Drag Racing In The Sixties
The most exciting and unpredictable cars in drag racing just had to be Fuel Altereds. These cars were short wheelbase coupes and roadsters powered by the same high horsepower engines found in the Top Fuel Dragsters. The combination produced some wild, exciting and memorable racing.  Many of the Fuel Altereds had names like "Pure Hell", "Winged Express", "Rat Trap", "The Mob", "Nanook", "Pure Heaven" or "Groundshaker Jr.". the individual
competitors included Willie Borsch,Leon Fitzgerald, Mike Sullivan,Jim Miles, Leroy Chadderton, Rich Guasco, Don Green, Leon LeBaron, Glen Way, Sush
Matsubara, Dave Hough, and many, many others.
The popularity of the Fuel Altereds grew from the great performances of many racers in the early 1960s. Just a few of them were Mooneyham and Sharp, the
Brissette Bros., Dunn, Merritt & Velasco, Gabby Bleeker, Boyd Pennington, the Cederquist Bros., Burkhart, Brammer & Burns and Denison, Arlasky & Knox. And there were many others.
This book tells the story of the Fuel Altereds. It begins with the 1957 fuel ban when both nitro and alcohol were outlawed from drag racing. But just like
Prohibition (of the other type of alcohol)the ruel makers could not completely shut off the nitro. The rebirth of the Fuel coupes and fuel Roadsters quickly generated more competition and improved performances. By 1965 the cars were called Fuel Altereds and drag strips in California were starting to scheduling Fuel Altered Elimination programs. The late 1960s were great for Fuel Altereds racing enthusiasts. there were numerous cars and lots of Fuel Altered Elimination programs. The racers could win some money and get some publicity. It was wonderful but it only lasted a few years. In the early 1970s the changes in drag racing soon led to the demise of the Fuel Altereds. Gone but not forgotten. The Fuel Altereds were the most exciting cars in drag racing.

Also the book shows the evolution of the car styles in the Supercharged Gas Coupe classes including Fords, Chevys, Willys', Anglias, Mustangs, Austins, Opels and others.
The blown gasser history covers the time period from 1960 to 1975. In the early years the blown gas coupes were the fastest stock bodied cars on the drag strips. The racers generated large amounts of publicity with ads, challenges, accusations and charges, plus some great racing. The magazines and drag racing papers wrote often about blown gasser competitors. Many of these competitors profited as match racers. This is all covered with photos and a year by year history.
